THE BREIF STATES 

Option 1: Film opening task (video) 

Main task: the titles and opening of a new fiction film (to last a maximum of two minutes). Titles should follow the institutional conventions of commercial cinema. The task may be undertaken individually or as a group. There should be a maximum of four members to a group.  All images and text used in the main task must be original, and produced by the candidate(s). Sound should be predominantly original (dialogue and atmospheric sound), though music taken from an acknowledged source may be used as part of the soundtrack. This task should be preceded by relevant preliminary exercises to build up candidates’ skills with equipment and their understanding of conventions.

INTITAL REACTION:

We (students) are expected to create the opening scene and titles of a new fiction film – 2 minutes — what the film is called and a what it is about but not revealing to much about what will happen as it must make the audience want to continue to watch the film. 

Titles should follow the institutional conventions of commercial cinema — industry standard-this is where Company Logo's, titles of key cast members, establishing shots, action, non-diegitc music and enigma . 

All images and text used must be original and if music is added, you must acknowledge the main source, so that it is not copyright. 

IDEAS

  • Scary music playing in the background  
  • Starts off with black scene — this will create suspense to the audience as they will not understand what is going on. 
  • Dialogue between characters or a dietetic sound between them — might a scream 
  • establishing shots of the location — which is important 
  • There could be a monologue which breaks the fourth wall — directly speaks to the audience about what is going on at the specific moment — but the monologue is going through the persons head — so we are inside their mind.
  • There might be a chase scene between characters — someone running away.
  • Close-up shots

Today, we started to play around with some more sounds, to match them up with the video. After we played around with music, we realised that in majority of the opening in thrillers (based on research), don't have music playing the whole time, so we tried to see what that looked like, using some diegetic rain sounds that we made, however, it did not look as good without other music, so we did a mixture and added in our thunder sounds and used music, that we found and developed to match the storyline of the opening. On garage Band, we started to create some of our own music, so that we were not copyrighting anyone and that the music was to our taste. The music involved violins and other instruments used in creepy music  we tried out many different sounds with different notes, to see which works the best. WHAT IS A THRILLER? A thriller is a genre of literature, play or film with an exciting plot. Typically involving crime or espionage. This type of genre's primary features are what induces strong feelings of excitement, anxiety, tension, suspense, fear, and other similar emotions in its readers or viewer. There are many sub-genres in thrillers. There should be a main 8 things that every thriller needs which help with the elements to be essential to the plot. Thrillers must also include a climax — there must be a plot twist or on rememberable scene to the film THRILLER Vs HORROR The first factor that differentiates both themes of the film is that a thriller is more psychological and requires more thought and explantation throughout the film as to what is going on, whereas Horror's are more bloody and gore with carless actions of violence e.g. slashers.
