LOCATION SCOUT by Maddie

Location Scout

I have decided I will be filming in the woods in one scene as this is potentially where the main narrative of the film will take place. Woods in thrillers are normally seen as haunted or where evil-happens, this will help me construct suspense. The lighting in a forest can fluctuate throughout the day, however as it is winter there is already a blue undertone in the atmosphere, which stereotypically matches the lighting in thriller as it can portray the idea of cold and crisp, although with the lighting changing throughout the day it can make it hard for it to stay the same for a certain period of time which can make it difficult to film. A way I could make the lighting right is either editing over the clip after filmed or make sure I film it at the right point of the day. Some other difficulties that can occur is the public population could walk through this means that there will have to be a lot of takes incase people are walking by. Ideally one of the first scenes would take place within the woods as it helps correspond with the ideas of the opening sequence.

Another location that I have decided I might use is an alleyway. They are uses to show when the protagonist is going the wrong way or where something bad happens. The problems that may occur is similar to the woods location, this means the lighting could change throughout the day a way that I could help prevent dramatic light change is by using either a ring light to make sure that there is a light source or film that scene in the middle of the day. The ideal lighting in the woods, would be dark due to the action that will happen, beed to be played out in the dark. Alleyways are used a lot in thrillers as the portray crime and danger. When someone walks down an alleyway they automatically feel unsafe, this is why this location might potentially be used at it is has key aspect and features that make the audience feel scared. Another difficulty that could happen is if people walk through and the noises in the background, this could led to having to reshoot the scene/shot more times than needed. The scene that might happen hear is the consequence scene that happens after the woods scene.

Another location is graveyard. Graveyards are creepy and give off eerie atmosphere which help create suspense and tension. Graveyards are sometimes used to help foreshadows an event that will happen later on in the media product. The graveyard would probably be filmed at the beginning of the film as it will later be revealed as to why a graveyard was shown. This location correlates alongside with death, threat and someone being vulnerable. The lighting in graveyards are unpredictable, however, with graveyards the lighting does not affect the creepiness of the location, it the camera angles, storyline and music behind it which can make it scary, due to the setting being used in a Thriller there will be that element of wonder and anxiety included. Problems that may occur when filming in graveyards is that it can be disrespectful to the dead, a solution that I can do is only show the back of a grave so no names are shown as it is personal to them and the family, if i only show the back of the stone it will not only be respectful but it will also make the audience curious as to whom may lie there.

I have decided that I am going to use an everyday location in one of the scenes, to bring so realism to the opening sequence. The setting being used will be the kitchen as people use it everyday making it more life-like which is used to generate an atmosphere with more connection with the audience. Kitchens are used in every film, normally this is where news is shared with family members or friends as it is easy access for people. The lighting in kitchens are easier to control than outdoor locations as you can block out light from outside with blinds or with the light switches. There are not many problems that can occur in a kitchen only problems is household noises which cannot be contained. The scene that ideally would be filmed in this location is one of the last scenes, as this is where news may be shared.
