 NARRATIVE  Narrative is the way information is delivered to the audience. The way in which a story is told in both fictional and non-fictional media texts. Traditionally, narrative structures followed a formula which was identified by the theorist Tzvetan Todorov. Todorov studied classic fairy tales and stories. He discovered that narratives moved forward in a chronological order with one action following after another. In other words, they have a clear beginning, middle and end. Todorov also suggested that the characters in the narrative would be changed in some way through the course of the story and that this would be evident by the resolution. Non-linear narratives and circular narratives have a structure that is not so straightforward. A non-linear narrative can move backwards and forwards in time usually using a flashback technique. This is used in the film 500 days (of Summer) which follows a relationship but we see flashforwards and flashbacks as the story progresses....

Title of the Film Script    C1 = Ted Phillips – Protagonist (main character) C2 = Autumn Hill – Dog walker (the victim) Extras – Family members    Scene 1    The setting – The forest, at night, low-key lighting, women walking her dog, there is no other people walking around meaning she is alone. Around 8:00 at night. Music playing – what C2 is listening to, diegetic sound   Autumn Hill will be wearing everyday clothes – leggings, trainers and hoodie – hair will be down. The women is in her early 20s   Opening shot - Medium Close-up Shot of dog’s front body walking towards the camera in a forest. (5 seconds)   The camera shot slowly tilts upwards to show the young girl walking around, with headphones in listening to music. (2 seconds)   The branches of twigs start snapping (music stops) – sound of someone stepping on them. The facial expression of Autumn should be scared and confused as we get a closeup of her face.   M-E-S Research  COLOUR Colour carries certain connotations which may add meaning to the scene i.e. red - danger black-death. With this the scene can give off a particular look, feel or mood as the colour create the atmosphere. Colours can also be used for dramatic effect such as triggering audience memories as they may have  specific memories or thoughts with that specific colour. Particular colours in a carefully chosen palette may be recurrent or contrasted throughout a film, in Thrillers they chose darker colour palettes as it creates more suspense and a eerie atmosphere. The colours can act as a trigger for certain emotion or link to other important moments in the narrative - can link from something in the beginning to the end. It is strongly linked with lighting and will influence all areas of production design - props, costumer and setting ect. The colour of the film also helps create suspense and tension.
