MY TOP 5 THRILLERS

 MY TOP 5 THRILLERS

DON'T BREATHE

Don't breathe is about three delinquents - Rocky, Alex and Money they are the three Detroit thieves who get their kicks by breaking into the houses of wealthy people. Money gets word about a blind veteran who won a major cash settlement following the death of his only child. Figuring he's an easy target, the trio invades the man's secluded home in an abandoned neighbourhood. Finding themselves trapped inside, the young intruders must fight for their lives after making a shocking discovery about their supposedly helpless victim. The director is Fede Álvarez, the film was released in 2016. The film has the key elements of a Horror Thriller because there is no supernatural force everything is based on a realistic event. There is some form of protagonist (the blind man) and antagonist (the three teens) it follows the Todorv theory the old equilibrium is the three teens breaking into peoples homes, the disequilibrium is the blind veteran and the new equilibrium is the fact that two of them died. The film also has a eerie location of a old creepy house with bars all around the windows, this creates a lot tension and suspense because it made everyone wonder why there was bars around all the windows and why it looked like nobody lived there. The lighting in this film is crucial because they need to give off the feeling that the blind man is not the average blind man, this film goes against the stereotype of blind people being weak and helpless, this means that in some scenes they need to replicate how they see the world - they do this by having a scene where the characters can't see what is happening or where the blind man is - this sets the mood of horror and can create an anxiety feeling for the viewers as they do not know where the man is.  Don't breathe has a lot of Thriller characteristic such as the camera angles, sound, lighting and the M-E-S as it includes very stereotypical features - a lot of close ups when danger is happening, A lot of diegetic sound (creaky floorboards, screams and gunshots) and the lighting is very dark as there are a lot of dark tones - Black, blue and grey tints. Also the house matches the M-E-S conventions as it is old, creepy, dark and its the house that people try to avoid this is the stereotype of the antangosot house in Thrillers.

GET OUT

Get Out is about a boyfriend called Chris (Daniel Kaluuya) and girlfriend called Rose (Allison Williams), who are going to meet the parents of Rose. They have a getaway upstate to meet her parents Missy and Dean. First, Chris reads the family as a very intimating family as they attempt to deal with the interracial relationship, but as the film/weekend goes on a lot disturbing discoveries are revealed that led him to the truth that he could never have imagined. The director of this film is Jordan Peele, he released this film in 2017 (very modern). This film has a lot of extreme close ups — this helps the audience focus on all the facial expressions and help give off how Chris is feeling. This film is showing that some people in this day and age are still racists against people. Towards the end there are lots of cliffhangers (which are soon revealed) and long pauses which both create a feeling of being trapped to the audience as he is in a "sleep state". We view the scene from the protagonists (Chris) point of view this helps give the audience the true feeling on how he is feeling and what is going to do. There is a lot of sound used in this film both diegetic and non-diegetic, this helps set the mood for the scene. The scenes where the music speeds us helps prepare the audience for the climax that is being led up to. This film falls in the Horror Thriller genre as there is always that sense of death that may happen to Chris. Get Out uses a lot of bright colours to represent the country and joy as everyone around him is always smiling. The M-E-S at represents normal everyday life as we see him and his girlfriend playing out there everyday jobs, only when we get to the middle of the film does the Mise-en scene start to change as their "guests" start wearing 18th/19th century clothes and start speaking like they are there and acting like it is that era by the way they are acting towards Chris. The lighting changes throughout the film as it represents different places and situations, the darkest the lighting goes is when Chris is sent into the sleeping state.

SHUTTER ISALND

Shutter Island is a Psychological Thriller as it plays on everyones mind. The film is based in 1954, where US marshals Edward "Teddy" Daniels and his new partner Chuck Aule, they both travel to Ashecliffe Hospital for the criminally income on Castle Island in Boston Harbour. They are there to investigate the disappearance of the so called patient "Rachel Solando" who was incarcerate for downing her three children. The ending is how we know is it defiantly a psychological thriller because everything is revealed. There is a lot of conspiracies thrown around by Teddy Daniels. Shutter Island is Psychological Thriller because there is no supernatural force, we see what is inside and what's going inside Teddy's head. The film has a representation of a males leading the investigation and running the Hospital which is sexist towards women, however, the film. Is based in 1954 where only men would be police Marshalls - they are being stereotypical that men have power over women. It has a lot of features that make it a Psychological Thriller but the main reason is because of how it plays on the audiences mind. Shutter Island has really good editing techniques as throughout the whole film we are told that Teddy is the good guy only until we are told everything that has happened made sense. He appears in every scene which shows that he is never really left alone and when he saw the man that started the fire it was planned as they had placed a tape player to record their conversation. The lighting is very eerie as it creates more suspenseful atmospheres to keep us at the edge of our seats. The costumes he wears slowly starts to turn into the inmate clothing as they are trying to get him to remember what he has done. There are a lot of close-ups and establishing shots to help the audience understand where they are now, what is going on and the close-ups help the audience focus on the emotion,

What if they wanted you here scene

BIRD BOX.

Bird Box is a Sci-fi Thriller and a Horror Thriller as it involves a supernatural mysterious forces that completely destroys the population, but the only way you die is if you see it. The population who survived the first wave must avoid coming face to face with the forces that take one your worst fear. Malorie takes on the search in hope to find a new beginning for her and her children but to do this she must embark them on a dangerous journey through the woods and down the river to find a safe place, but to do this they have to be blindfolded otherwise they face the force. This film has uses a lot of diegetic sounds to shows the intensity of the water and the loudness of the screams that the people are making. The director is Susanne Bier who has tried to show that being blind isn't all that bad sometimes it can save your life.  This film does not show the "stereotypical" women because she is saving herself and the children. The protagonist in this film her Malorie and the antagonist is the forces that are trying to kill them. The location in this film is based in a forest within the forest you can hear the sound of the force coming towards them - the sound is diegetic because the characters within the scene can hear it. The sound in this film is very important as it helps represent the "creatures" and the loud noises in the forest, with the audience knowing that the noises means danger they can prepare themselves for when they start to hear the sound. The colour palette includes a lot of green (nature/forest), blue (water), black (when trapped in house/supermarket) and many other colours. This is one of my favourite thrillers because of the way the story plays out anyhow the camera angles and editing is used to make it seem real and life-like.

A QUIET PLACE

A Quiet Place is also a Horror Thriller and Sci-fi Thriller as it included as supernatural animal who has very good hearing. The Quiet Place is about a family (including Emily Blunt and John  Krasinski)  who are struggling to survive in a world where most of the population have been killed by a blind, buy noise-sensitive creatures. They are forced to comminuted by sign language so that the creatures cannot hear them. They have specific moments where they can speak for example behind the waterfall as it blocks out the sound. Due to the fact that there is no dialogue the producers/editors have to really emphasis the little noise there is like the noise of when they walk in the sand. The director of this film is John Krasinski he is one on the main characters within the film. The film has a low saturation which makes the colour more vibrant but in an eerie way. A Quiet Place included a lot of violent scenes against the supernatural creature hence why it is a Horror Thriller Sub-genre.
