 Audience Research Reflection 

Based on my research about different audiences and my survey I have gathered information such as different age groups prefer different thrillers and different genders would prefer different locations such as a man would rather see a thriller based in the city rather than the forest or any other locations. These results from my survey have helped changed my ideas slightly to help me reach the standards of the ideal age rating. 

The results from the survey is below: 

In this question I asked what age the participants of the survey are. The question ranges from 10-80+, however the results my data base is main focused around the ages 15-25, 41-60 and 71-80. This means I have wide variety of answers to help me with my audience research for the opening of my thriller. 

Here we have peoples favourite thrillers(out of the options) and majority of people selected John Wick which is an Action Thriller the people who chose this answer are mainly from the ages 42-71 this is because the film is aged more towards their age category. Also the men were the most common gender to select John Wick, this shows that some stereotypes do still exist such as men liking guns and action scenes more than women. The Firm which is a Legal Thriller was second highest, which came a surprise there was a variety of people who selected from different ages and different genders. Shutter Island and Silence of the Lambs are also very popular, Shutter Island was mainly selected within 15-31 ages this shows that younger people prefer Psychological Thrillers and the massive plot twists at the end whereas the Silence of the lambs was more in the older people category as it is a classic Thriller and very simple but good plot twists and suspense. The rest of the options tied at 4 people or lower this shows that those Thrillers are very common ones, as they fit into the Thriller stereotypes. 

This question is asking how often people watch Thrillers. Majority of people answered weekly and monthly. More people pressed never than anticipated, however, the people who pressed never where in either the 15-18 age or 71-80 this shows that audiences are targeted by their psychographics (likes/dislikes) rather than demographics. From this data I have gather that majority of people love to watch weekly or monthly rather than yearly or daily. 

This is a key question for my research as it helps me gain ideas for what I need in my opening Thriller scene, to see what viewers think is the most important feature to a thriller. In this survey the general consensus from most people was the suspense feature and plot twists. These are the key features of Thriller so the answers reflect the stereotypical representation of a Thriller. The storyline also received many votes as that is a key part in any genre of film, not just a Thriller. In a Thriller, the storyline ideally need to be simple with lots of twists and turns. I was surprised to see that not many people voted for climax as that is an important part of a Thriller as this is normally the storyline is based around. However, the camera angles had no votes, this shows that the other features are way more important and noticeable than the camera angles. The majority of people who choose violence and action were males and women mainly choose the music and locations. 

This is also a key question towards my final project, as it tells me where people would expect to see Thrillers. The most popular ones are City and Forests, the city was mainly picked my 26-80 and the forest was mainly picked by 15-18 this helped me figure out where my most intense location will be in the Thriller. As I am planning to target my film at the age rating 15 I will plan to locate in the forest as this is where majority voted for. 

96% voted Yes for if they liked plot twists and 4% voted for No. This shows that mostly everyone likes plot twists in Thriller as it helps create a fan base for the Thriller. Plot twists are mainly scene in Thrillers or Horror this is why people get confused between the two, but plot twist are an important characteristic in Thriller as it confuses the audience meaning they will talk about it making more people watch it. Plot twists are most important in Psychological Thriller as throughout the whole film people try and figure out what is happening and only at the end they find out.

The rest of the questions where to help me establish whether they watch films that have been targeted to them demographically or psychographically. A lot of my responses was based on their likes and dislikes which falls in the psychographic category,, they mainly watch Thriller fro enjoyment. The age rating that I am planning to target is 15 which means that I will be locating my opening sequence within a forest and there will be lots of suspense as that is a key charcacteritc within the film genre. My Thriller sequence will be based around the Horror Thriller sub-genre as that is the most popular thriller genre throughout the overall survey results.
