Titanic Use of Mis-en Scene
In Titanic there are mainly only two settings, the salvage ship and the Titanic Ship. Lighting in this film is key as it helps operate the different classes. Lighting is being emphasised on texture, distance, mood, season and time of day. In the beginning it is mainly low key lighting when people are treasure hunting under the sea in an submarine, the first thing we see if the lights from the submarine, they used to the spotlight of the submarine to try and find the remaining parts of the titanic, it conveys a sense of sadness as many people died from this disaster. When we first the two main characters Jack and Rose there is high key lighting as it is apart of the upper level on the ship with back then was for the upper-class, the high key lighting contrasts the lower level normal lighting which seems darker in comparison this is so that the audience can feel the extravagant of the upper level and also the simpleness of the lower level. The costumes in this film refer to the clothes that people wear. The main character Jack Dawson has only two different outfits this is to show how he is apart of the lower class and doesn't have enough money to bring more, where are Rose has several different outfits in this film this is to show the difference between upper class people and lower class people as in the Victorian Times there was a bigger gap. The scene below is the most famous scene from this film which is the ship sinking. In this scene there is a main prop used which is the iceberg and the lifeboats. The use of props and the location in this scene is what makes it so realistic and "scary"because it is based on a true story, in the middle of the ocean and that it could've happed to anyone, as there was a range of people on that boat. When the ship is sinking we can see that people are falling off the boat we can mainly see this at 3.37 as people are holding onto dear life but falling in. The lighting use at 3.45 is trying to get the audience to focus on the water and that the ship is nearly at the end. 2.45 into the clip we can see all of the plates and cutlery floating around as the room starts to fill up with water this creates tension as the rooms are filling up so quickly. This film has inspired me because the use of props are important because it shows urgency and stress
Camera Angels
YOU use of Camera Angles
In the TV series YOU, there are a lot of camera angles that have inspired me to use them in my Thriller piece because the camera angles help focus on the main subject, in some cases its zooming in of Joe's face or following him walk while he stalks Beck. The way the camera moves into Joe's face while he is stalking Becks' social media is by trying to show what is going on through his mind, while there is a voiceover of him talking about her, which makes the scene more creepy. While he is stalking her you can see the look in his eye, which is just him staring and not blinking the way the camera focuses on that can make the audience feel uncomfortable as they feel like he is talking to them. 0.04 seconds into the scene below you can see how the camera cuts to see how fast his fingers are typing her name and how quickly he is trying to get information about her, the camera cuts to show how quickly the letters are coming up on to the screen, this shows how intrigued he is to find out everything about her. As the scene continues you can see how the camera shots flip back and fourth between the computer and his face, at one point the camera from a low angle, starts following Beck and how she is taking a picture of her book. The camera angles have influenced me to use low angle shots and close ups as it helps give off emotion because the way that it is zooming in on his face or following Beck walking help give off the representation of how vulnerable Beck really is and how dangerous someone like Joe could be.
American Horror Story
In the scene below we see when Tate is first introduced, this is by him telling everyone what he has done, which cuts into a flashback using a a jump cut into another location, while still have the audio playing this is called a L-cut as the voiceover is playing over into the next scene with a mixture of non-diegetic music - Kill Bill whistle and a light soft tempo piece of music, to create a sense of calmness as he mentions he doesn't feel anything and using this piece of music helps portray that feeling. This has inspired me for my piece of work because L-cuts are very effective when trying to bring audio over from one scene into the next and that is something that I may use within my work. Also the editing in the scene, due to a lot of cutting on action when Tate is walking down the school corridor, the camera jumps forward, then back to where it started then, the camera is following him and then it cuts to show us his face which is covered with paint which gives us the impression that he is empty and emotionless this is good use of Mise-en Scene as it helps portray the character. This whole scene has given me the inspiration for my ideas as it shows me what techniques I need to include to make it a good Thriller opening sequence as this is our first impressions of Tate, and this is how it is shown,
