RESEARCH INTO MUSIC

MUSIC

Music in thrillers can help set the scene. Music can help create a more convincing atmosphere of the time or place for where the film is being based. In some scenes there may The a muted bass note in the music, this leads to the audience decoding that something sinister is about to happen, whereas upbeat music will encode something jolly. Music is crucial factor that must be taken into consideration when producing a thriller films. It helps build suspense, tension and overall fear in either the scene or film. Without music the audience may find it harder to prepare for any jump scares that may come up. In the Modern day Industry, they will also focus on music as it is a key aspect. For example in Shutter Island, in this film the music is used to build up on the tension and fear. In the scene shown below the music its used to build a stressful image - between the two characters emotions and hearts. The music is used is called "the Nature of Daylight" it is a piece of music that gradually speeds up so it fits the scene perfectly.

When adding music to a Thriller you have to consider the way it can affect the setting of the film as the music can enhance the ambiance without even realising it. The audience will relate to the sounds and music in the story as it will help them get more emotionally involved. Most music in film can be heard in the background of any scene, sometimes it takes the spotlight in an intense scene, it helps makes a statement. The most common style of music we hear in Thrillers is instrumentals because music with lyrics often distract the viewers form the dialogue or storyline at the current point in the film. In Thrillers diegetic sound is being played repeatedly throughout the film. Some examples would be a creaking door or weather outside. In some Thrillers they use Silence to create tension as the audience cannot hear anything of what is happening, so it can create stress. Music can set the tone of the film for example in Silence of the Lambs there is a very eerie and creepy introduction music to help prepare the audience for the rest of the film. The creepiness in the opening music relates to the creepiness of Lecter, when he speaks to Clarice and when Buffalo kidnaps the women

In psychological Thrillers the music is more frequent with more fluctuations in pitch, tempo and volume to create moments of high and low drama and tension more different and separate. Slow and low pitched music often overlays moment of little or no tension, often music is used in these categories of scenes with expositions and flashbacks as they fall into the caterogy. However, in scenes of tension it is the complete opposite than slow low pitched music instead there is a high pitch orchestra style string music being played to help create a dramatic atmosphere and stress the audience out more. Sometimes, extremely high pitched music can be played in the background of the after math of a major scene to covey the repercussions of what has occurred. For example in the trailer for Insidious there is both the slow dietetic sound and the high volume orchestral music which both build tension.

The non-diegetic music in thrillers is fairly repetitive, creating anxiety and agitation for the audience. Non-diegetic sound used to increase the tension and create a sense of desperation and paranoia. There are sound bridges being used to help cut to another shot, without the action being interrupted, this is very important in a thriller as it allows the audience to still feel tension even when the action is no longer in view of the scene. Dialogue is diegetic, and often the dialogue creates a very tense atmosphere. Music can make or break a film, as it needs to help convey the right idea from the film, in Thrillers your more likely to hear low bass music rather than upbeat music apart form in Reservoir dogs where there is an 80s song playing in the background while the antagonist is torturing someone, this is a well-known scene because of the music choice, the music in this scene is diegetic as the characters in the film can hear it, we know this because one of them is signing along with the song on the radio. Music has an extremely important role in any movies. One of the strongest functions that music can do is that is can create the atmosphere is movies. It can help set the tone and make the audience aware when there may be a plot twist coming up ahead as the music will change.

Music can change the emotions of the characters within the movie. A face with a neutral expression can be pushed into “feeling” many different things just buy what kind of music is used. In the same way it works of course very well to evoke certain emotions with the audience. This function is also applicable to the audience as the right music can make the audience feel whichever emotion the film maker requires them to feel. Music can also work very well to establish a certain time or period. Music that sounds very baroque will put us back into the 18th century but references can also be more subtle. Flashbacks over a few decades for for example can be very well supported by the musical style which adapts to the time portrayed in the movie and therefore makes the flashbacks more understandable.Music can help the audience to understand or develop character. For example, through listening to the song “When She Loved Me,” in Toy Story 2, the audience learns the sad story of the character “Jesse."
